How to Run a PPSR Check Before You Buy
A PPSR check is the cheapest insurance you can buy before handing over money for a used car in Queensland. The Personal Property Securities Register reveals finance owing, write-off records and stolen status in minutes - here's exactly how to run one and read the result.
The Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is a national, government-run database that records security interests over personal property - including cars. For a buyer, a PPSR check answers one critical question: does anyone else have a financial claim over this vehicle? If you buy a car with finance still owing, the lender can legally repossess it even after you've paid the seller in full.
What a PPSR report reveals
- Encumbrance - whether finance is owing and which lender holds the security interest
- Written-off status - if the vehicle is recorded as a repairable or statutory write-off
- Stolen status - if the vehicle has been reported stolen and not recovered
- Registration details drawn from the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS)
- A unique certificate and search number you can rely on for legal protection
Search by VIN, not just the plate
Number plates change, but a VIN stays with the vehicle for life. Always run your PPSR search using the full 17-character VIN to get an accurate, transferable result.
What a PPSR check does NOT tell you
A PPSR certificate confirms that a vehicle is recorded as written off - but it won't tell you whether the repairs were done safely, whether stolen parts were used, or whether the car will pass its Written-Off Vehicle Inspection. The PPSR is a financial and status check; it is not a physical or engineering assessment.
- It won't assess the quality or safety of any repairs
- It won't confirm whether airbags or seatbelt pretensioners were genuinely replaced
- It won't guarantee the car will pass a WOVI or earn a safety certificate
- It won't reveal odometer tampering on its own
PPSR is step one, WOVI is step two
Use the PPSR to confirm the car's status and clear title before you buy. To actually re-register a repairable write-off in Queensland, you still need to pass a Written-Off Vehicle Inspection through Transport and Main Roads.
When to run a PPSR check
Run a PPSR check before you pay any deposit - including at salvage auctions like Pickles, Manheim, Lloyds and Grays. Auction listings often disclose write-off status, but a PPSR certificate confirms it independently and protects you against undisclosed finance from a previous owner.
